Most of my career 30 plus years was in computer science. On that basis all kinds of people having trouble with a variety of different personal computers automaticall assumed i knew everything about their persoanl flavor of computer and operating system. At the very least when they had I problem the assumption was that if I just looked at it I could solver their problem in no time. Since they claimed some kind of tenous connection to me they didn;t feel any need to compensate my for my time or knowledge. If I asked for compensation invariably I’d get the inevitable, “Well if you feel that way about it forget about it.”
I’m retired now. When people ask for my help I generally tell them that where some local computer repair shops are with a reference to the fact that computers have changed a great deal since I retire. Not an untruth.
