Ravings of a lunatic part 1

Okay, maybe not a lunatic, but a sleepless, late night, pondering person.

What if…

1a: God is not a particular *person or soul, but a combination of a collective love? Like, they say “God is Love” but what if there is a literal ball of light or fire, or a huge sun that is made up of 100% pure love and our purpose for being put here is to manufacture love – kind of like “The Matrix” but better. We are faced with challenges, (or not) and the amount of love we produce despite set backs fills this ball of light with more and more love until we reach our quota and then heaven is created? Maybe people who live an easy life and create love add small amounts to the ball of light and those in harder situations produce love that is more valuable and worth more to the ball of light? I think, for me, at least, this makes me feel a little better about not being perfect. I may have a bad day and may be irritable and less patient, but that’s okay because I can only add to the love sun when I can.

And then, if you were to commit suicide, all that light you contributed gets snuffed out because all the people you helped or made happy will now be even sadder that your light was tainted.

1b: So, I’ve always struggled with why God couldn’t just make good things happen and why he allows for bad things to happen, but what if He actually cannot have any direct effect on the world? What if He can only inspire us to do things and it’s up to us to listen and do His will or deny Him and have do whatever we want? And if you listen to Him, good things happen for the world and, eventually for you, but if you don’t, things may end up fine or not. So, God is more like a puppet master (Cue “Stranger Things” guitar solo scene).

2: What if… the saliva that mosquitos inject into your skin after they suck your blood that triggers that immune reaction that so awful and itchy is actually there to STOP the bleeding so you don’t die. What if mosquitos actually really love us (or don’t want their host to die) and just want the blood to stop? Okay, maybe not, they also are the biggest killers of humans worldwide because even though they mean us love with their spit, they also are like flying dirty hypodermic needles spreading bloodborne disease.

3. Have you ever thought about how silly many of our disagreements, murders, wars, persecutions really are?? I mean, think about it. The biggest difference between the three main religions in the world is whether or not this guy, Jesus, was the savior. That’s it. One dispute, same God, different prophet/savior. Why, oh WHY does that mean we all have to kill each other? If I think a particular actor did a better job at playing a character in a movie than another actor, does that give me a right to go out and murder an entire community because they believe differently? Or change the politics of people’s lives because they don’t agree with me on cinematic artistry?? I’ve literally heard of churches fighting and splitting over whether an organ was played or a keyboard. It really is completely silly. Please STOP.

Okay, new and crazy ideas to come later.

  1. Ok, I think 1b is the closest to my thoughts, but I’ve decided God has given us free will. That means he doesn’t make good things happen or bad things happen. It’s all random coincidence.
Now after something happens, God is there to help you through it.
That’s the only way I can personally reconcile the things I’ve had to deal with, namely blameless children suffering with a incurable syndrome.

  2. Wow! Certainly a lot to think about. I really enjoyed your take. And yes…churches sure can fight over silly things. In the grand scheme of things, what does it matter?!

  3. Like I said before. The few people I did CPR on and woke in front of me before we got to the hospital cursed me out because they crossed over to the other side and met God and many people rushed up to welcome them with love. If you google YouTube for Dr. Mary Neal who was resuscitated after being dead for 30 minutes in a drowning that was on Dr. Oz show said the exact same experience my patients said 40 years ago. Seeing all the death and suffering I think we are in living hell and we living in a pain free loving world on the other side. We did have one guy who attempted suicide at the George Washington Bridge and just as he stepped off he changed his mind but it was too late. Fell 300’ a broke a lot of bones. As for if you go to a different place if you commit suicide, never resuscitated one of those calls. I have saved a few suicides via OD before they died, but they were only pissed or said God wants me to complete a mission.

  4. All very reasonable musings. If I were as articulate and creative as you are, I’d add to your list, but I’m not. I particularly liked 1a and the last one about religious differences. I’m with you all the way on that one!

Please keep thinking and recording your thought!

  5. This is a really interesting post, and I can agree with most of it. Just not the mosquitos, little blood suckers that they are.

  6. I like you. God must have given us free will for a pretty good reason. I don’t know what it is, but God must hold it in high esteem. The longer I live the more uncertain I am about my beliefs regarding God. I figure I’ll find out in the not too distant future. I like the idea of a globe of love shining.

  7. Today I think I saw every one of my favorite episodes of “The Incredible Dr. Pol”. All the ones where you handled emergencies, like Bub, and Winston. They are two of my favorites. The leader of my church was asked by a grieving mother why God would let her son drown when she needed him so much. He told her he did not know why, but he knew with a certainty he could have stopped it. I think we can drive ourselves crazy if we try to figure out why some people have such a hard time in this life and others just breeze on by. Enjoy your posts, even though some of them are confusing.

  8. Deep Thoughts on a Wednesday morning waiting for my 2nd shingles vaccine shot.

  9. I mostly agree with this statement “but what if He actually cannot have any direct effect on the world? What if He can only inspire us to do things and it’s up to us to listen and do His will or deny Him and have do whatever we want?”
I think Satan has a direct effect on our world and it will get wiped out with Jesus’ second coming.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

    1. I agree that Satan has a direct effect on this world. The bible says he goes around seeking to steal, kill, and destroy, and for a short time God is allowing this. Although the bible also says God causes all things to work together for good. So I think even when we can’t see what He’s up to and it looks like things are chaotic and out of control, God is behind the scenes working out his plan. We will understand it all one day, but right now all we can do is have faith! Not easy for sure, but that’s all we can do right now.

  10. 1b. Many people prayed for the souls that were being murdered during the Holocaust. But, God gave us free will to exercise his will, He doesn’t do it for us, that is why we are here, to exercise his will. And man finally did intervene by ending the Holocaust and ridding the world of that evil. That was us doing His work. There will always be evil in the world, it is up to us to do everything we can to end it, whether individually or as a country. We are not doing a very good job right now, partly because of a government that supports evil, and the other because so many have not been taught about that relationship we are suppose to have that gives us the free will to do His work. Each one of us have to answer to our own maker, that is what the individual relationship is with God. Not to others but to Him, and that relationship, along with our free will to do good which in turn helps others, is what it is about. It wasn’t always like this, as God has been removed from our lives, and His word, we have seen a gradual decline in human behavior, and our society. The killing is because they have not been taught anything about Him, the relationship with him, or his teachings. For us older folks it has been a very sad thing to watch. You and your family can only do what you can so when you meet your maker He will know you did your best at exercising His will. The others will have to answer to Him for their deeds.

  11. You may enjoy a person named Richard Young on Facebook – he asks the same kind of questions about love and the universe.

    BTW, love the pink hair!

  12. So Dr. Emily I hope you read your replies. I know you respond on twitter and instagram. I passed on this essay a holy roller in the family opposite of myself and here is his comment.

She’s expressing the groans of trying to find truth. She is asking the classic questions many if not most have. She should check out the program created by an English attorney, who while in college, wanted to convince his classmates the Bible was wrong, and convince them to stop exploring Christianity, or anything for that matter; He decided the best thing for him to do was read the Bible so he could convince them it was nonsense. He couldn’t stop reading it. He wound up becoming a believer and a pastor. He’s very well known in the Christian community. We offer these sessions each year for anyone who wants to attend. Nickey explains about the reliability of scripture and why we should trust it. It’s a great series.

I believe this is the session that speaks of it.

  13. The answer to all your questions is found in one book..The Bible. We listen and read it daily on the Bible In On Year App. Read beautifully by David Suchet of Inspector Poirot fame and commentary by Nickey Gumbel, head of the Alpha project.Bible, cover to cover in year, 20 minutes or so daily . Can be life changing.

  14. Really confused by the article. Since when does Emily wear so much make up. I really wish Emily would contact me. She does not seem at all like the woman on TV. Miss the previous wonderful writings. I suffer great pain 24/7. Just take it one day at a time and much crying happens. I will never know why.

      1. Too much makeup where did that come from. She looks great with no makeup and probably enjoys not wearing any and she seems to enjoy mixing her looks up everyday for fun. She has the same religious confusion I and most people do unless you’re brain washed to only accept one view. Actually Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson world renown astrophysicist recently questioned if we’re living in an experiment.

    1. I don’t think she had the time or energy to wear a lot of makeup or do her hair the way she would have liked to on Dr. Pol. Three small kids, a crazy schedule at Pol Vet. She was exhausted! Now her kids are getting a little older and she has a little more time for herself without being on call all the time. That’s just my guess.

I’m sorry you are suffering. I will pray for you. Take your pain to the Lord and He will hear your prayers.

      1. Very grateful for your prayers. That is what sustains me every day. I am alone and only have the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to depend on. To know you will pray for me is a blessing. Thank you, Kim

        1. You are welcome! We all struggle with different things in life but don’t give up. Consider reaching out to a local church for support or even a Christian counselor if that is possible for you.

Look into a radio broadcast called New Life Live. They take phone calls from people who are struggling and need help finding resources like counseling and they are all Christian counselors and give wonderful advice. You don’t have to suffer alone!

          1. Thank you. My faith is what keeps me from taking my life. I miss being part of a caring church. But they are so few in my area and never married I was never included in most things. too much pain for too long, I am exasperated. Where is the radio station you mentioned? I am in Littestown PA. My pain is physical and emotional. The physical affects the emotional greatly. Prayer is what sustains me. I do not know why I am on this earth. I pray I am help to someone. Cannot get out and no one comes. Bless you.

  15. I love to see your out of the box thinking. Paraphrasing an old Greek philosopher, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” It makes sense to try and think about what God is. About war, it is the dumbest endeavor we as humans engage in. Yet, it is so much a part of who we are. Some primates engage in group wars. Something went wrong as we developed, but came by it through our genes.
